This course will consider several major areas of contemporary concern, which may include but not be limited to public health and environmental issues, crime and violence, and structural inequalities. Through discussions of multiple perspectives and research, students will learn to analyze social problems critically and to evaluate competing claims about what counts as a problem, as well as the causes, the consequences, and what societies might do in response.
